Light

Investigating shadow doodles in Ms. Cullina’s 3rd class.

The children explored how opaque objects such as our autumn leaves would not allow light to pass through and therefore created a shadow. The closer the light came to the object the smaller the leaf became and the further away it grew bigger.

The children outlined their shadow doodles and created funny characters. A lovely experiment on those dull autumn days.

Heat

3rd class investigate the variations in temperature in the classroom.

The children were introduced to how using a thermometer can tell the temperature and discussed why being able to tell the temperature would be important for example the temperature of the soil for growing and how hot a sunny day might be.

The children discussed which area of the classroom would be the hottest and the coldest. We also discussed the benefits of placing the radiator under the window.

3rd class have been learning decimals in Maths and this was a lovely opportunity to practise counting using decimals.

A record of each experiment is written in their procedural writing copies. Drawing diagrams of our experiments can help to explain the procedure.
