1st Classes visit the Galway Atlantquaria

Tom Cuffe – Origami and Maths

Tom Cuffe visited 2nd and 3rd class to teach the Japanese art of paper folding. The children learned how such similar folding techniques are used for developing stents to open arteries in a blocked heart.

These folding techniques are used for packaging and for folding objects used in space by NASA astronauts!

The children practised folding their own swans learning mathematical language: edge, vertex, angle, symmetrical and right/acute/obtuse angles.

Galway City Museum – Traditional Boats and Buoyancy

Both 3rd classes visited the Galway City Museum and experimented with building boats using plasticine. Brendan McGowan brought us on a tour of the display of the old Claddagh and the children learned all about the traditional Galway Hookers.
