VEX IQ ROBOTICS COMPETITION

Ms. Leen’s 4th class took part in the Vex IQ robotics competition in conjunction with Atlantic Technological University (ATU) and sponsored by Thermo King Trane Technologies.

The children in 4th class were tasked with building their own robot, a Clawbot and practiced collecting blocks of different sizes and placing them in goals.

The event ran on the ATU Galway campus on Wednesday, January 17th. Schools from all over came to compete. Claddagh National School competed in eight games. Each game lasts 1 minute, and the objective is to score as many points as possible by collecting blocks and dropping them in the goal.

There were many positive impacts of the children learning robotics, including innovation, design, create, engineering, and cooperative learning.

Data Delights

Both third and fourth classes teamed up to investigate and record the number and variety of sweets in each of the different sweet boxes, including Roses, Quality Street, Celebrations, and Heroes. The results that we found were interesting.

Predictions!

Can you predict how many sweets are in the box? Estimate how many varieties there will be. Will there be equal quantities of all varieties?

The children in both 3rd classes learned the basics of Excel. Excel is a spreadsheet program that allows the children to represent data collected in different formats, such as bar graphs. The children grouped into their original data-gathering teams to cooperate on this next step in our project. They found that Celebrations had the most sweets of all!
